The Five Worst films of 2014

As I sit and try to enjoy the first few days of 2015, there are still a few rough things from last year I need to get off my chest: The five worst movies I saw in 2014.

5. 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

While not as dreadful as 2007's 'Spider-Man 3', and a bit more entertaining than 2012's forgettable reboot, 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' is still a mess. The performances from Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are still great, but they're accompanied by a script that never allows us to see their relationship blossom in a realistic manner. Instead, we're forced to watch a horribly cliche Electro backstory featuring one of Jamie Foxx's worst performances. Even with a few fun sequences, 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' is a bloated CG infested sequel to a reboot that didn't even need to happen in the first place.

4. 'The Maze Runner'

I gained nothing from this YA novel adaption, whatsoever. A poor man's 'Hunger Games'. The performances are fine, but it's such a lazy effort from a directorial standpoint. Not to mention one of the most forced cliffhanger endings I've ever seen.

3. 'Dumb and Dumber To'

It really shouldn't be that hard to make a sequel to 1994's 'Dumb and Dumber' starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. As long as the gross-out humor is presented as skillfully as it was twenty years ago, a sequel should be smooth sailing. Sadly, that was not the case when the Farrelly brothers revisited this idiotic duo this past November.  The film falls into the tropes of an Adam Sandler crap-fest rather than a second part to a '90s comedy that still holds up quite well. Mean spirited, and not worth the wait.

2. 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'

Michael Bay returns to the eardrum-killing franchise yet again. This movie continues to prove that Bay doesn't care about what he films, as long as it will make him a fortune. With a new cast and new set of characters, Bay could've made something a bit less grating than the past two 'Transformers' films. Alas, it's still loud, sexist, racist and far too long. Even when the movie takes a quick break from the constant clanging and yelling, we're treated to some of the worst written dialogue of the year. I was particularly intrigued by the moment in which the film stops to explain why Mark Wahlberg's twenty-something sidekick is able to have intimate relations with Wahlberg's seventeen year old daughter. Keep it classy, Michael.

1. 'The Expendables 3'

Sylvester Stallone has made some great stuff and some utter crap, however I was never, ever bored by a Stallone action flick....until 'The Expendables 3'. Now that all three films in this horrendous franchise are complete, we can take a step back and examine. It's a real lesson on how a great idea can turn into such a wreck when the wrong resources are provided. The action sequences are incoherent, the plot makes little to no sense, the one-liners seem to be written by an eight year old, Mel Gibson's talents (as an actor...NOT a human being) are completely wasted, and it's over two hours long. Trying to find a redeeming value in this mess is basically just trying to find something that I hate the least. It's a bore from start to finish, and one of those films that makes me want to apologize for being a Stallone fan. That hasn't happened since 'Spy Kids 3'.
