Movie Catch-up: Scorecard

I've been absent from the site for the past month or so. I thought now would be a great time to give a quick overlook to a few of the big movies I've seen in previous weeks and give them my quick thoughts and score them each.

*'Avengers: Age of Ultron'
A somewhat fun, but disjointed new addition to the Marvel cinematic universe. The performances are still fine and some of the fight sequences can be visually jaw-dropping. However, the biggest sin this film commits is that it's surprisingly forgettable. Not a trait you want from a massive Marvel film.

Grade: B-

*'Mad Max: Fury Road'
George Miller returns to his beloved dystopian 'Mad Max' franchise with relentless ferocity. A film which may be on par with his 1981 action masterpiece, 'The Road Warrior', and is the best hollywood blockbuster of its type since 'The Dark Knight'. An utterly brilliant and insane piece of work in which all the stars align. The best film of 2015 so far.

Grade: A+

*'What We Do in the Shadows'
A delightful New Zealand "mockumentary" from the minds behind 'Flight of the Conchords'. A hilarious look at the life of vampires living as flatmates. Tons of fun for fans of vampire films, 'This is Spinal Tap', and just plain good comedy.

Grade: A

*'Tomorrowland'
Brad Bird is a terrific director, and his love for classic Disney and 50s sci-fi shines brightly in the early moments of 'Tomorrowland'. Sadly, Damon Lindeloff's script asks too many big questions that lead to extremely disappointing answers. A sweet movie and an admirable effort, but certainly not the experience it could've easily been.

Grade: C+

*'San Andreas'
Dwayne Johnson gives what may be the truly best performance of his career in a pretty terrible movie. Cliche, loud and not quite sure of its tone. It reminded me of a Roland Emmerich film from the late '90s....in all the wrong ways.

Grade: D+

*'Spy'
A fun premise worthy of some pretty solid laughs. However, I just didn't quite find this Paul Feig comedy to be as funny as the majority of critics and film goers did. However, it's certainly one of Melissa McCarthy's better films in her post-'Bridesmaids' resume.

Grade: B-
